Car Rental at Tanger Med Port: What to Check Before You Book

Ferries don't run on time as often as the schedule suggests, and neither does a rental desk that's waiting three towns away. Here's what actually changes your experience — before you land, not after.

Our Standard

Every booking follows the same three rules: the agent who confirms your reservation is the one who meets you at the port, every car is inspected before it's handed over — not just when something looks worn — and drivers speak your language, not just Arabic or French by default. This is what stays constant, whether you're renting for a day or driving to Marrakech.

Before you book

five things that actually matter

Not a price comparison — a checklist of what changes your experience on the ground, at the port, before you've even reached the car.

01

Where do you meet the car?

Some rental listings advertise a "Tangier" pickup address that's a 45-minute taxi ride from Tanger Med Port itself — travelers often don't realize this until after booking. TangerRentals meets renters in person at the port, coordinated by WhatsApp before boarding, so there's no separate office to locate after a ferry crossing.

02

The person who meets you

At most ports, "customer service" means a counter, a queue, or a shuttle bus to an office you have to find on your own. At Tanger Med, TangerRentals works differently: a real person — not a kiosk — is messaged directly through WhatsApp before you board the ferry, and that same person is standing at the port when you land. They walk you to the car, hand you the keys, and answer questions in person, not through a phone tree.

03

What "inspected before every rental" actually means

Every car is washed, wiped down inside, and mechanically checked before it's handed to the next renter. Each vehicle carries a condition rating out of 5, based on age, mileage, and this pre-rental inspection — so what you're told about the car's condition is logged before you ever see the keys.

04

Whether you pay before you arrive

No upfront payment to reserve. You confirm the booking, and payment happens once you've seen the car in person.

05

What happens if your ferry is delayed?

We track the crossing and hold your reservation up to 2 hours past the scheduled pickup if you let us know. No call, no drama — we're already watching.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to pay anything upfront to book?

No upfront payment to reserve. You confirm the booking, and payment happens once you've seen the car in person.

Is there a security deposit for car rental at Tanger Med Port?

Yes, a €1,500 security deposit is blocked on your credit card at pickup. It's a hold, not a charge — released once the car is returned in the condition it was handed over.

How is the pickup arranged?

Your agent confirms your name and ferry by WhatsApp before you board, and is waiting for you in person at Tanger Med Port when you land.

What do I need to rent a car?

Bring your driver's license (held at least a year), your passport, and a credit or debit card in your name. You'll need to be 21 or older. Most nationalities don't need an international permit, but contact our team if you're unsure.

What type of driver's license do I need to drive in Morocco?

A regular license from the EU, UK, US or Canada works fine on its own. If yours isn't written in French, English or Arabic, you'll also need an International Driving Permit alongside it.

Can I rent a car without a reservation?

You can, if a car is free when you land. Don't count on it in July or August — walk-ins get turned away more often than not during peak season. Booking a day ahead solves this.

How far in advance should I book a car for Tanger Med Port in summer?

At least a few days ahead in July and August. Availability tightens in peak season and walk-ins are turned away more often than not — booking ahead avoids that risk.

Can I cancel my reservation?

Yes, free of charge if you cancel more than 48 hours out. Inside that window, we'll bill you for one day's rental — that covers the car we held for you.

For how many days can I reserve a rental car?

Up to a month. Need it longer than that? Just contact our team and we'll work out a rate.

Can anyone beside the reservation applicant drive the car?

Yes — just make sure every driver brings their license to pickup. There's a small daily fee for each extra driver. If someone can't be there in person, send us copies of their license and passport at least a day before.

Is it acceptable if the person who reserved the car is not the one who will be driving it?

Yes, reservations can be made by individuals who won't be the car's primary driver. It's important to confirm the actual driver's details in advance.

What does "inspected before every rental" actually mean?

It means the condition you're told about is checked, not guessed. Each car gets a rating out of 5 before it's handed over, and any existing wear is noted with you at pickup — so nothing about the car's condition is a surprise later.

What happens if I arrive late for car pickup due to a delayed ferry?

If your ferry — from Algeciras, Tarifa, or elsewhere — is delayed, contact us as soon as you're aware you'll be more than 2 hours late. We track your crossing and hold your reservation — no stress, no penalty, as long as you let us know.
